Being a Steward

The word “steward” has been popping into my mind a lot recently.  It is simply such a good word, implying care, responsible oversight, an awareness of a future that goes beyond oneself, and being in service to something that we hold dear.  I think of John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt, park rangers, and even Smokey the Bear – all stewards of our environment.  There is something steadfast there.

I also think of parents.  What a magnificent stewardship that is!  Parents guide their young ones into an unknown future that stretches beyond them.  As Kahlil Gibran wrote, “You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.”

Stewardship has been defined as an “ethic that embodies responsible planning and management of resources.”   There is accountability there.  There is an honoring and holding of space for the greatest good.  There is thoughtfulness.

A steward is at the helm while also serving as the rudder, lovingly keeping things on course.

We can all embrace being stewards of our families, our careers, and our relationships.  We can be the stewards of ourselves – overseeing our own health and well-being.

Being a steward involves stepping into loving authority.  There is a tenderness there along with heightened adventure.  You step into a joyous journey when you become a steward.

Imagine yourself as your child’s steward.  How does that feel?  If you are in an intimate relationship, see yourself as the steward.  Imagine that at work, at school, at home, and in the world.  It is a leap that is of tremendous value and one in which you contribute highly.  It is leadership straight from the heart.

See yourself as the steward of all that you hold dear, being sure to include yourself as a part of that dearness.
